Claude Projects: keeping a long research task in one place
Projects in Claude bundle files, instructions and chats around one task. When it saves time, and when it gets in the way.
When research stretches over a week, the most expensive part is re-explaining the context in every new chat. Projects solve exactly that: you add documents and instructions once, and every chat inside the project sees them.
What a project holds
- Project knowledge — files the model considers in every answer: specs, notes, spreadsheet exports.
- Instructions — standing rules: tone, output format, language, constraints.
- Chats — separate conversations that share context without cluttering each other.
Set it up in 10 minutes
- Create a project for one task, not a whole topic. “Comparing CRMs for an NGO” works better than “Work”.
- Add 3–5 key documents. More isn’t always better: irrelevant files dilute the answers.
- Write a 5–7 line instruction: who you are, what you need, in what format.
- Open a new chat inside the project for every sub-question.
Where it won’t help
For a one-off task a project is just an extra step. And if your documents change often, you’ll have to re-upload them — the model doesn’t track the original file.
