GPT-6.1 Terra: OpenAI’s half-price model for computer use
The new model works in ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API at $1 / $5 per million tokens. OpenAI claims it’s over three times faster than Sol and Astra.
On October 26, OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra, a fast, efficient model that combines visual reasoning with precise computer use. The company’s examples include filling out forms, editing videos, interpreting technical drawings, drafting proposals and automating repetitive desktop work.
What’s new
- Price: $1 per million input and $5 per million output tokens, 50% less than GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
- Speed: OpenAI says it completes tasks more than three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
- Errors: at low reasoning effort, the error rate fell from 53.6% on GPT-5.6 Terra to 16.7%.
- Code: 50.3% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 at maximum effort, against 21.5% for its predecessor.
How to try it
The model is available in ChatGPT Work and Codex on Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu, and through the API as gpt-6.1-terra. It also began rolling out to GitHub Copilot the same day.
Limitations
For the most complex coding tasks, OpenAI still recommends GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra. All the numbers come from the company. The model acts on your computer, so don’t leave it unsupervised on actions that are hard to undo.
